Modified Labor Matrix and Charted Progress Reports

Most contractors actually use a cost per square foot model, i.e. a shower room quality kitchen may cost $200 per square foot. A basic kitchen may be $120 per square foot. Some use spreadsheets to track line items or to organize costs. Mahogany uses a modified labor matrix that graphically shows a customer the effort and cost for the project. On the X axis we list the major categories of work, on the Y axis are the tasks grouped by trade. It is visual.
Customers instantly understand the effort and thus the cost to complete the project. It empowers customers. Once they can actually see the cost breakdown, they can make informed decisions on what to add or take away from a project. If they want to paint themselves, they can see the cost savings.
We start with a visual and use a simple and straightforward estimation process. Labor and materials are tracked to the penny and the client is updated weekly with project reports that go from the summary to detail level. There are never surprises and our customers feel like they are part of the process and not along for the ride. We bring an unprecedented level of project management expertise to the estimation, planning, execution, and project follow-up. We offer integrated design services on a a-la-cart basis. From color consulting to full interior design services, we assist our clients on their terms. Some need affirmation that their ideas will work and are within budget. We tie the entire process together by tracking the hours for each of the categories in our matrix. The result is a graphical chart progress report that shows budget and tracks progress.
